A wooden statue of a nude human figure known as the Dagenham Idol was discovered in Dagenham, Essex, England, in 1922. The statue is among the oldest human representations discovered in England, having been carbon dated to approximately 2250 BC, during the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age.

Standing 18 inches (46 cm) tall, the statue is crafted from Scots pine. It has a spherical head, two legs but no arms, and hips and buttocks that shrink to the waist before widening to the shoulders.

After reading about this fellow it sounded like a perfect candidate to add to my ever-growing “Idol” collection!

This project actually turned out to be a really simple and quick too. After grabbing a few bits of sprue and a base, I started by glueing three small lengths together to form the main body and legs. Then I did the same again but this time with six pieces to make the head.

Next, I spent a little time carving out the main shape of the body and drilling the hole in the unmentionables. Next, I fashioned the head by carving, drilling and scraping into a rough likeness of the original. Then I attached all the parts together it was complete.

To paint it, I chose a dark brown before adding a few brighter highlights.

This makes the “Idols” into a small warband and now it has four members (The Orkney Venus, Kingsteignton Figure, Horga’hn ). I can’t wait to make the next one!
