SPRUE TERRAIN Part 2: Silo

I saved this sturdy pot just before it was going to be lost forever in the recycling. The size was perfect to convert it into a piece of terrain. With this in mind, I grabbed an empty sprue and some other bits and pieces and went about creating a cool building.

I started by sawing off the top of the pot to remove the screw part. Then, using sandpaper, I roughed up the plastic to give it a distressed look and to allow the paint to stick to it. After studying the sprue, I selected a couple of rounded bits and, combining them with some straight lengths, glued them on to make a large doorway.

To decorate it further, I attached thin strips of plastic inside the doorframe and added screws all the way around. I finished it off by sticking a small doorknob and a plaque above the door. Feeling like it needed a way for minis to get onto the top, I made a quick ladder and glued it onto the side.

I painted it super quick with a base coat of black before adding a heavy dry brush of silver. To get the rust effect, I stippled firstly brown, then a more sparingly orange. I completed it by painting the screws to look like brass and the door / plaque in a distressed red.

SPRUE TERRAIN Part 2: Silo

After taking all the photos for this blog, I thought this was the end of this project. But whilst tidying, I found this interesting piece of sprue. Goodness knows where it came from, but it would look cool if it was placed on top of the silo. So I painted it and glued it to the top. Now it was done!
