Greek Hoplite Sprue

I got this Greek Hoplite Command sprue a while ago from Warlord Games as part of a larger order. Having never painted Greek minis, I thought it would make a nice change. The problem was, I just couldn’t decide what to do with them. So I just got started, hoping for inspiration to strike.

Greek Hoplites Command - Part 1

After playing around with the sprue for a while, it finally came to me. The warrior would look fantastic as a statue!

So I grabbed a couple of leftover bases and started to build a wall from chopped up pieces of sprue. I have to be honest; this took quite some time to place each individual stone to create a nice circle. But eventually I managed to construct three layers.

Next, I cut longer lengths of frame and glued them together. Then I trimmed it into the shape of a stone plinth (with plaque).

Before joining both parts, I gently filed down the top of the stonewall to make them fit nicely together. Then I noticed the five heads left on the sprue. So I scooped them up and glued each one to the top of the plinth. To finish it off, I released the warrior from its base and attached him to his shiny new plinth!

Painting

The Ancient Greeks loved a bit of marble, so I attempted to paint a marble effect for the first time! And for the mini itself, I kept it nice and simple by covering him in bronze and applying a quick wash.

I could use it as an objective marker, or at the very least something that could get in the way when the battle ensures? Anyway, I still have a few bits of sprue and the flute player leftover, but I’ll save those for rainy day!
